Indian Premier League (IPL) History
The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a cricketing spectacle and a cultural extravaganza of India. It was established way back in 2008 but the operations started in 2007.
The IPL had its birth when the apex body of Indian cricket, the Board Of Control For Cricket In India (BCCI) wanted to match up with the Indian Cricket League (ICL), which was funded by the Zee Entertainment Group.
After India laid their hands on the ICC T20 World Cup Trophy of 2007, the craze of T20 cricket reached an unprecedented high level. This was the perfect opportunity for the IPL to start and it was in 2008 that the 1st edition took place.
The tournament was headed by seven people comprised of BCCI officials and former Indian players. The format of the game was to be more or less similar to the NBA conducted in the United States or the Premier League of England.
In 2008, Rajasthan Royals won the IPL after beating Chennai Super Kings in the finals. Yusuf Pathan had bagged the player of the match award.
There were a total of 8 teams in IPL initially and there was an auction round. MS Dhoni who had a base price of $400,000, was sold for a whopping amount of $1,500,000. He broke all records and his price shattered the entire roof.
Andrew Symonds of Deccan Chargers was the next most expensive player after being purchased for an amount of $1,350,000.
In 2010 there were 2 teams that were added to the IPL. Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Pune Warriors India were added to the IPL. But just after a year, Kochi was banned. In 2013, Pune Warriors India played their last season too.
After Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings were banned in 2016 for a couple of seasons, Rising Pune Supergiants and Gujarat Lions were named as replacement teams.
After the duo returned, the two new teams were dissolved.
IPL 2022 witnessed two new teams being added to the roster of IPL. Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans paved their way to the prestigious and glamorous IPL. The two teams were the new members in the party and had a phenomenal outing.
The Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat side also lifted the IPL 2022 trophy after a stupendous run in the tournament. At the moment IPL has 10 teams and it remains to be seen if the organizers add more teams in the forthcoming future.
